 complements the LOCAL syllabus

The programme works closely to the syllabus used in the Sri Lankan school curriculum. It provides a unique experience for pupils to gain a higher level of English developing key skills such as speaking, reading and comprehension. Sri Lanka has one of the highest literacy rates in South Asia, but often rural communities are underfunded lacking the facilities and equipment needed. Two of Sri Lanka’s main sources of income are generated from tourism and remittance (working overseas). Both require the ability to speak the English language. Many rural school children can understand and speak basic words in English. However, their comprehension and conversation skills are undeveloped.

Throughout the week we will dedicate time for you to plan your sessions. Here you will have the opportunity to input your own interests into the programme by creating fun and exciting lessons.

At the end of each week you will report all progress and feedback into the programme’s database. This allows us to identify individual students’ strengths and weaknesses, so we can focus on key areas to help them reach their full potential. This also ensures continuity of the programme which is important when exchanging roles from one volunteer to another.
