What Makes Travelteer Different from a Normal School Trip?

When you book a school trip abroad, you want it to be more than just a change of scenery. You want your students to experience a different culture, develop new skills, build confidence and, most importantly, make a meaningful contribution to the communities they visit.

At Travelteer, that's exactly what we set out to achieve.

But there's something that makes us different from many other school expedition providers: we don't simply send students to volunteer with third-party organisations. We own, operate and develop the projects that make our trips possible.

We Didn't Just Create Trips. We Built the Projects.

Travelteer was founded on the belief that international volunteering should be about creating meaningful, long-term connections between students and the communities they visit.

Rather than simply partnering with existing organisations and sending groups overseas, Laurence Tranfield and Laurence Storrie went out to live in the communities where Travelteer operates. They built relationships with local people, gained an understanding of the challenges facing these communities and established projects designed to deliver lasting benefits.

That hands-on approach continues to shape everything we do today.

Our projects aren't an optional extra added to a holiday itinerary. They are at the heart of Travelteer, influencing how we design our expeditions, train our teams and support our students.

Real Projects. Real Communities. Meaningful Impact.

Every Travelteer destination has its own identity, challenges and opportunities. Our projects reflect the needs of the communities we work alongside, giving students the chance to contribute to initiatives that extend far beyond their own visit.

Sri Lanka: Marine Conservation and Wildlife Protection

In Sri Lanka, our work includes partnering with the Sri Lankan Wildlife Department and establishing our own turtle hatcheries from the ground up.

Students can get involved in marine conservation and wildlife protection, learning about the challenges facing local ecosystems and supporting practical conservation activities.

Rather than simply visiting a wildlife attraction, students gain a closer understanding of conservation work and the importance of protecting the natural environment. They see how local initiatives operate and how sustained commitment can contribute to positive change.

Nepal: Supporting Sustainable Communities

In Nepal, our approach has included introducing sustainable farming methods to remote communities, helping support more sustainable approaches to agriculture and local development.

These initiatives demonstrate an important principle behind Travelteer: volunteering should respond to real community needs rather than simply providing activities for visiting students.

By working alongside local people, students gain a greater appreciation of the challenges faced by rural communities and the importance of developing solutions that are practical, appropriate and sustainable.

Morocco: Community Development and Education

In Morocco, our Atlas Outreach project gives students the opportunity to become involved in community development initiatives and support educational activities through our summer school.

Living and volunteering alongside local communities allows students to experience Moroccan culture beyond the usual tourist destinations. They can develop their communication skills, learn from the people they meet and understand how community-led initiatives contribute to local development.

Across our destinations, the principle remains the same: create opportunities for students to contribute to projects with a genuine purpose.

Why Does This Matter for School Expeditions?

For teachers, choosing an overseas expedition is a significant responsibility. You need confidence in the organisation delivering the trip, the people supporting your students and the quality of the experience you are providing.

Our hands-on approach makes a difference in several ways.

We know our projects. Because we operate our own initiatives, we understand how they work, who is involved and what students will be doing during their placement.

We have established local relationships. Our work is built around long-term connections with local teams and communities, rather than relying solely on arrangements made for individual groups.

We can create a more immersive experience. Students aren't simply passing through a destination. They have the opportunity to engage with local communities, learn about different ways of life and contribute to practical activities.

We focus on more than the trip itself. We want students to return home with new perspectives, greater independence, improved confidence and a stronger understanding of global citizenship.

Of course, a successful school exp
